Commissioner Noguez brought a discussion item on Oct. 28 proposing a bronze sculpture — a shark — by local sculptor Kirk Maguire as a potential public landmark to draw visitors to Tiburon.
Noguez described examples of other towns’ iconic sculptures and suggested a high-quality bronze shark as an identifiable piece that could "attract people to come, and they'd wanna come here and take a picture with that shark." He said the idea had support from the Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and suggested fundraising ideas, including a campaign-themed name.
Commissioners generally welcomed the idea but raised practical concerns: where the piece would be sited, public safety and access, long-term maintenance, and the cost of high-quality bronze casting. One commissioner recommended confirming which foundry the artist would use and assessing foundry reputation and fabrication quality.
Commissioners also noted existing downtown fixtures and fountains, and several suggested possible locations including the area near the train museum and other public spaces. Noguez said the artist is willing to present to the commission; commissioners supported adding the item to a future agenda so the artist could present designs, scale and cost estimates.
No formal motion was made; the commission directed staff to place a presentation by the sculptor on a future agenda for follow-up and further discussion of siting and funding options.
