Resident offers suggestions to ease congestion at county convenience center

Jerry Morris, a Chesterfield County resident, addressed the council about traffic, safety and operational issues at the Chesterfield convenience center. Morris described congestion at the gate and proposed separating the entrance and exit onto Goodale Road to reduce bottlenecks. He suggested moving the gate and front fence forward and positioning trash-bag compactors inside the fenced area so automobile drop-offs could be handled without entering the work area used by trucks and equipment.
Morris said the county’s current tire trailer is difficult for many residents to use because its swinging doors and height make loading tires difficult; he proposed building a low platform to ease loading. He also recommended placing wooden platforms adjacent to the heaviest-used bins to help people lift large items (mattresses, appliances) into containers, adding gravel on the site to cut dust and muddy conditions, clearing brush around the perimeter and removing outdated or excessive signage.
Council members thanked Morris for practical, incremental suggestions and noted improvements may come in phases. Morris said he is willing to assist and emphasized education and site changes could make the convenience center safer and more efficient as traffic increases under the new collection arrangement.
