Town parks staff previewed Independence Fest and a monthlong slate of Parks and Recreation Month activities during the Community Development Corporation meeting Tuesday.
Travis, the town’s assistant parks and recreation director, described July 4 programming that begins with the annual children's parade (lineup about 9:30 a.m., parade begins about 10 a.m.) down Timber Creek Road to Leonard and Helen Johns Community Park. The community-park family activities will run in the morning; pools at the Community Activity Center will host a "Stars and Stripes Splashtacular" from roughly noon to 5 p.m.; the evening program takes place at Bakersfield Park with gates opening at 5 p.m. The evening festival will include a car show, local vendors, a kids zone and musical performances. Travis named performers and the headliner: Hotel McDouby, LeFreQue, La Usual (as introduced), and Chris Jansen as the evening headliner. He also noted VIP parking passes and other event details are available at flowermound.gov/festival.
Travis said Parks and Recreation Month programming will include a digital photography contest (voting by Facebook), pop-up activities at parks and rec facilities, and a town proclamation recognizing July as Parks and Recreation Month that the mayor will present at the July 7 town council meeting.
Staff asked CDC members to attend the July 29 boards-and-commissions open house in the same meeting room; the event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and brings several town boards and commissions together with staff to talk with residents about board work and programs.
No formal action was required; staff requested the board’s awareness and made logistical notes about event staffing and promotion.
