Iredell County moves to write off $536,884 in unpaid invoices to Council on Aging

County finance and ICAPS staff told the board the balance resulted from missed and inconsistently issued invoices and a lack of monitoring by the Council on Aging. Rodney Harris, presenting for ICAPS, said the county and the nonprofit had met to identify and correct the problems and that, because the council is a nonprofit, collecting the full amount was impractical. "We're asking that you write that off," Harris said.
A representative from the Iredell County Council on Aging addressed the board, saying the debts dated back to 2020 and that new administration and updated processes have been put in place to avoid a recurrence. "With new administration, with new processes, contracts, and whatnot, we do not foresee this being an issue in the future going forward," the representative said.
Commissioners emphasized that the write-off removes the balance from the county's books rather than requiring a new cash payment, and that the county and the council will continue to collaborate on service delivery. "This just takes it off our books so it will no longer show up on the financial audit," Harris said.
The board approved the write-off by general consent. The county manager said checks and balances have been implemented to prevent similar problems going forward.
