Codington County's emergency management staff gave a monthly update at the Oct. 28 commission meeting describing recent exercises, equipment redistribution and seasonal planning, and the commission approved replacing two cold-water immersion suits for search-and-rescue operations.
Staff said they closed out LEMPG year-end items and conducted a simulated emergency test. Prairie Lakes provided surplus cots that were cleared by the Department of Health for shelter use; emergency management distributed 25 cots to Clark and smaller quantities to Henry, Wallace, South Shore and Waverly so those communities would have shelter capacity if needed.
The National Weather Service's winter outlook and local forecast guidance indicate a likely weak La Nia1a pattern, which forecasters say tends toward slightly below-average temperatures for the Northern Plains and some chance of wetter conditions; local forecast data cited in the presentation gave a 77% historical tendency for colder-than-normal outcomes in weak La Nia1a years for the area, though precipitation odds were mixed.
Separately, the commission approved a motion to authorize up to $2,500 for the purchase of two cold-water immersion suits to replace leaking or worn suits. Emergency management said the purchase would come from the search-and-rescue supply budget, which currently has more than $20,000 available. The motion carried on a voice vote.
