The Crafton Planning Commission on Oct. 28 discussed placemaking steps including gateway signage and integrating historic photos or interpretive medallions along new and proposed trail segments.
Commissioners said gateway planning could include design schematics and locations and that a planning-level study for gateways could cost roughly $50,000; installation costs would be additional. "It's expensive," a commissioner said, adding that design and implementation are typically eligible for grant funding and could be pursued with a local match.
Separately, volunteers from a local heritage group and a private historian (named during discussion) plan to digitize historic photos from borough archives and explore installing informational medallions along trail routes. One commissioner said the heritage group would present a vision in the next month or two, including possible locations and digital access components.
Members discussed tying gateway and historic elements to trails and business-development objectives and recommended tracking the heritage project as an ongoing initiative for future grant applications and budget considerations. No formal vote or funding commitment was made at the meeting.
