Flagstaff diversity commissioners report working-group progress; staff liaison announces departure

Commissioners on the Flagstaff Commission on Diversity Awareness provided updates on working groups and projects and heard from the commission’s staff liaison that he expects to leave the role in the coming weeks.
Commissioner Sanchez reported that a bilingual story time for American Sign Language is now running, that Spanish story time is scheduled to begin in the library’s winter schedule, and that the commission has a new community member joining the working group to support ASL offerings. "Bilingual story time is up and running for ASL," Sanchez said, and added she is seeking additional language readers, including indigenous-language readers; resident Sheldon Yazzie volunteered to help as a Navajo reader.
Sanchez also said the LGBTQ+ oral-history project has completed consent forms and will meet later in the month to operationalize interviews. The drag story hour working group has the CCC Spectrum Club as a community partner and is targeting a February date so the program could be in place by Pride in June.
Commissioner Darling gave an update on the Rainbow Crosswalk working group, which is stepping up public outreach, planning a community "happy hour" early next year, and seeking opportunities to table at First Friday and other events. Staff reiterated that informal working groups may include members of the public and up to fewer than a quorum of commissioners, they do not require formal agendas or minutes, and they must not present themselves as an official City of Flagstaff entity unless the commission takes formal action.
Chris, the commission’s staff liaison, said he expects this to be his last meeting as the liaison because he is relocating to Portland, Oregon. He said he will take steps to ensure a smooth handoff, including transferring meeting links or providing a new link and coordinating transition details with the incoming staff contact.
Commissioners asked staff to continue outreach for MLK Day planning with Northern Arizona University’s Office of Inclusion and to bring a plan for how commissioners can support the NAU-run event. Staff said the MLK Day proclamation will come to the commission in December.
