The Springfield City Historic Preservation Commission approved a request to add a roof to an existing front porch at 304 North Main Street, voting unanimously in favor.
The applicant presented photographs of the existing porch and an AI-generated rendering showing the proposed porch roof, which the applicant said would not change the porch footprint. The porch dimensions given in the presentation were 14 feet wide by 6 feet deep; the applicant said the proposed porch roof would match the existing roof pitch and would not expand the porch.
Commissioners asked about visual changes in the renderings and whether the chimney would be more exposed; the applicant and staff clarified the images included an AI rendering and discussed shutters and trim options. The applicant said the house’s main roof had been replaced in 2024. He also said he planned simple recessed lighting and possibly a ceiling fan for the porch.
Robert Ralston moved to approve the proposal; a commissioner seconded (not specified). A roll-call vote recorded yes votes from David Allen, Mary Dudley Onstad, Cynthia Burkin, Tony Cowan and Robert Ralston. The motion passed 5-0. Staff signed a certificate of appropriateness and indicated the applicant could proceed; staff and commissioners discussed next steps for any required permits and documentation.
The commission’s action applies to the exterior porch roof as presented; any subsequent changes to dimensions or materials would require further review.
