Manatee schools outline world-language instructional-materials adoption; public preview set for Dec. 10

District curriculum leaders described the instructional-materials adoption process for world languages during the Oct. 28 School Board meeting and invited community members to participate in the review committee and public preview events.
"Our instructional materials adoptions are driven by both Florida law and school board policy," said Tiffany Spradling, director of secondary curriculum, noting that the state runs a parallel review and maintains an adoption list the district uses to select materials. Erin Chapman, coordinator of instructional projects, walked the board through a 10-step process that includes a state short bid list, local "course call," IT pre-screening of digital components, a public preview night and a trained adoption committee that ranks materials for board consideration.
Staff highlighted the timeline: board approval of the adoption plan is scheduled for Nov. 10; committee-member applications will be accepted Nov. 12—20; public and staff access to sample materials begins Dec. 1; a preview night is scheduled for Dec. 10 at the Professional Support Center; and the committee's recommendation will be presented to the board in February. Curriculum staff said the state adoption list for world languages is now expected to be released in December 2025, allowing the district to align its local rankings with the state-approved list.
Spradling and Chapman said materials under consideration include Spanish and French (instruction currently serves roughly 3,700 district students). Staff also noted the state short-bid list included Spanish, French, Latin and American Sign Language this cycle; other languages are not part of this adoption round.
Board members and staff emphasized that the district selection process is collaborative and teacher-driven: trained teachers and community members will review alignment to Florida standards and the materials' resources for classroom use. The board will be asked to approve the formal adoption plan at its Nov. 10 meeting, after which the public will be able to review digital and print samples and attend the Dec. 10 preview night.
District staff encouraged teachers, parents and community members to apply to serve on the adoption committee and to participate in the preview and objection windows during the adoption cycle.
