The Marquette City Commission authorized staff to purchase one Peterbilt plow truck from JX Truck Center of De Pere, Wisconsin, using the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing program, at a cost not to exceed $265,000.
City staff said the Department of Public Works operates eight dedicated snow-removal routes plus a sander route; two older plow trucks were retired last season because of excessive frame corrosion. Staff recommended the Peterbilt model because it meets required height, width and turning-radius specifications for Marquette’s steep, narrow streets and because it has a track record of low maintenance. The purchase uses the Sourcewell cooperative to obtain an estimated 28% savings off MSRP, and delivery was estimated at approximately seven months after order.
Commissioner Ottaway moved to authorize the purchase; Mayor Pro Tem Schlegel seconded. Commissioners asked questions about interim coverage and the city manager confirmed the department is using a used truck fitted as a temporary plow while awaiting delivery and will redeploy it as a multiuse vehicle once the new truck is received. The motion passed 7-0 on a roll-call vote.
