New Ohio County nonprofit No 1 Fights Alone outlines capped aid for residents facing cancer

Katie Abner, treasurer of a newly formed nonprofit called No 1 Fights Alone (NOFA), told the Ohio County Fiscal Court that the group provides discreet, application-based assistance to county residents facing cancer-related costs. Abner, who identified herself as treasurer and said she works at Commonwealth Community Bank, described NOFA as a local 501(c)(3) that pays for needs such as gas cards, food cards, hotel stays and utility bills rather than handing out cash.

Abner said the group has helped seven families in just over two years and that it uses a capped-assistance model and an application process to reduce the risk of misuse. NOFA’s leadership listed in the presentation includes president Brandy Roth Gerber, vice president Stacy Abbott, treasurer Katie Abner and secretary Sheila Bartlett. Fundraising events cited during the presentation included a car show that raised about $1,600 in 2024 and about $2,500 in 2025; a separate walk produced roughly $2,300 but attendance was low and much of that was mail-in donations.

Abner asked the court and the community to help publicize the nonprofit and noted plans to collaborate with regional wig shops and other services that support cancer patients. She said the organization is legitimate, that it maintains donation receipts and can accept anonymous referrals via its application process. Abner advised anyone seeking assistance or confidentially referring someone to contact the group through Commonwealth Community Bank or the organization’s listed leadership.

No implementation details, budgets beyond those fundraising totals, or formal commitments of county funding were provided at the meeting. The presentation was a request for visibility and referrals rather than a request for county appropriation.

The court did not take any formal action on the nonprofit during the meeting.
