Sussex County Council voted Oct. 21 to grant a conditional use to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Southern Delaware for an on‑premises electronic message center (EMC) sign on the south side of Lewis Georgetown Highway (Route 9), subject to agency approvals and an added nighttime dark‑hours condition.
Staff noted that Planning & Zoning had recommended approval subject to all state and county agency approvals, including DelDOT. During council deliberations a council member offered a condition requiring the sign to be turned off each night between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.; council adopted that condition and required the applicant to obtain any necessary DelDOT approval for signs along scenic byways or state routes.
Councilwoman Kornabaum moved to adopt the conditional use as amended; the motion was seconded by Mister McCarron. Council recorded votes in favor and the motion carried. Several council members reiterated they would prefer fewer roadside electronic signs but that Planning & Zoning—s recommendation and agency approvals warranted the conditional use with the adopted restrictions.
Next steps: The applicant must secure all required state and county approvals, including DelDOT sign permitting or concurrence, before the EMC can be installed and operated.
