Laurel parents press board on maintenance; board approves full parking-lot bid

One long public comment emphasized that Laurel serves about 90 children and said the school ‘‘deserve[s] a nice school’’ and should not be left behind when the district distributes funds or grant awards.
Board and staff agreed to walk the building as soon as possible and to schedule a work session to inventory needed maintenance tasks. Board members and staff discussed grant sources, including TVA/TGA grants and other playground grants, and noted that some playground equipment has been funded through competitive grants in other schools.
Later in the business section the board considered two rebid options for a Laurel parking-lot project after rebidding the project post-flood. The district presented two base bids: base bid A (drive strip + 13 parking spaces), low bid $104,060.50; base bid B (full parking lot with ~31 parking spaces), low bid $218,782.65. After discussion and questions about community use and events, a board member moved to accept option B (the larger lot). The motion carried on a roll call vote recorded in the transcript: “Mister Greaver? Yes. Miss Klein? Yes. Mister Matheson? Yes. Mister Robinson? Yes. Mister Long? Yes.” The construction bid was awarded to the low bidder for the chosen option.
The board also approved a separate Doe Elementary purchase of playground equipment ($9,311) using a TBA grant earlier in the meeting. District and board members said they will coordinate site visits and communicate grant options and timelines for Laurel work at an upcoming site walk and a follow-up work session.
