Leahy and Oliver schools open; construction punch-list and closeout work continuing

The board received an MSBA construction update on Oct. 8: both the Leahy and Oliver school projects have opened and are serving students, but project teams remain on site to complete punch-list items and manage closeout and reimbursement with the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
Staff described the two schools as fully occupied (about 1,000 students between the Leahy elementary and Leahy middle) and said teams are addressing final finishing touches, minor condensation and ceiling repairs, and documentation needed for MSBA closeout. The superintendent and facilities staff said the construction manager and owner's project manager remain engaged during the closeout period.
School staff report students and families have responded positively to the new buildings. Administrators noted extra monitoring is appropriate in the first year after opening so the construction team can respond quickly to any defects discovered during normal building operations.
The board asked whether recent heavy rain had caused any roof or water-intrusion issues; facilities staff said only minor condensation-related incidents occurred and crews addressed them promptly. Staff said open houses and community events have been held and that schools will continue to host family engagement activities.
