Enrollment steady near 13,100; attendance at 92.3% and breakfast participation flagged

Lawrence Public Schools reported a snapshot enrollment of about 13,143 students at the Oct. 8 board meeting and a districtwide daily attendance rate of 92.3 percent through Oct. 3.

Maria Ortiz, director of enrollment, said the district is managing capacity at school and classroom levels; several grades at particular schools are closed at capacity, and the district assigns new students to nearby neighborhood schools when openings are not available. Ortiz said the district typically sees another 300—500 students enroll after the winter holiday period and that staff work to keep siblings together where practical.

On attendance, Superintendent Carrero and staff said an overall 92.3% daily attendance rate is a positive sign given recent community events and a high rate of newcomer students. Carrero noted several schools have reached attendance levels in the high 90s and credited attendance staff and family outreach.

Nutrition staff and the superintendent raised concern about low breakfast participation in some large schools. Several schools recorded breakfast participation under 50 percent (examples: Oliver complex roughly 37%, Frost 32%). Nutrition leaders said the district is piloting hot breakfast options and grab-and-go service to raise participation, and staff will continue parent outreach and site-level campaigns to improve uptake.

Board members asked for periodic follow-up on enrollment trends, siblings and capacity planning and requested monthly updates on breakfast program participation.
