Bluff staff presented a draft ordinance on Oct. 28 that would prohibit commercial vehicles from idling for more than two consecutive minutes within the town limits, with exemptions for traffic congestion, emergency vehicles and required maintenance or safety procedures.
The draft designates the Bluff mayor as the reporting/enforcement entity and sets a proposed penalty of $500. Staff said the two-minute threshold follows examples in similar ordinances elsewhere and asked for public feedback on enforcement and scope.
Public commenters urged the town to consider applying restrictions to noncommercial vehicles as well, noting school buses and other common vehicles can idle for extended periods. One commenter suggested a longer grace period (for example, five minutes) to avoid penalizing drivers briefly stopped for calls or short tasks. Commenters emphasized that education and signage should precede aggressive enforcement.
The ordinance is under review; council and commission members invited written feedback through Nov. 7, 2025.
