Resident raises alarm over proposed Broward County sewage sludge dryer and truck/pipeline risks

During public comment on Oct. 23, resident Tammy Littery told the commission she opposed Broward County proposals she said would locate a sewage wastewater sludge dryer near neighborhoods in and around Coconut Creek and centralize waste processing operations.
Littery said the county's plan would dry sludge into pellets to sell as fertilizer and rely on methane or pipelines to fuel the dryer. She warned of "bomb truck" risks from transporting methane and cited recent sludge dryer explosions in other jurisdictions; she also asserted the dried material could contain "radioactive contaminants, carcinogenic chemicals" and urged the commission to push back and request an environmentalist be appointed to the Solid Waste Authority.
City staff accepted the comments and said they would take them under consideration. The commission did not take formal action on the matter at the meeting; it was recorded as public comment for future follow up.
