The Lawrence Alliance for Education recorded several formal actions during its Oct. 8 meeting. Key outcomes:
1) MCAS competency-determination revisions: Approved by roll call (5-0). The policy update reflects DESE guidance requiring documented mastery of skills, expands acceptable measures (final course assessments, portfolios, projects) and adds U.S. history as a competency for the Class of 2027. The district must submit the revised policy to DESE by Dec. 31 for final approval.
2) Strategic Plan 2025—2030: Adopted by roll call (5-0). The five-year plan, prepared with Education Resource Strategies and stakeholder input, sets six district priorities and will guide budget and personnel alignment.
3) Facility use requests: Five community and nonprofit requests were approved (gym rentals, performing-arts recital, charter school events, youth basketball competition). Roll call recorded one abstention (Maria Mueller) for the facilities motion; otherwise the motion passed.
4) Minutes: The board approved meeting minutes from June and Sept. with several abstentions recorded for members who were not present at those prior meetings.
Roll-call excerpts were read into the record for each vote. The board recorded results for each motion and noted next steps where applicable (for example, the DESE submission for the MCAS policy and translation/publication for the strategic plan).
