New Riverton Youth Council outlines projects, seeks roles on city committees

Members of the newly formed Riverton Youth Council presented a progress update to the City Council on Oct. 7, asking for opportunities to advise and support upcoming city projects.
Royce Hancock, elected chair of the youth council, said the group has established officers, meeting times (every other Wednesday, 4–5 p.m.) and bylaws; vice president Tierney Fabian and public relations officer Aurora Valdez described early priorities: creating a QR‑linked flyer and Instagram account to promote youth opportunities, advising on plans for the recreation center and contributing to the River Walk project. The youth council also volunteered to help with community events such as a Thanksgiving dinner and trunk‑or‑treat activities.
Mayor Tim Hancock and council members encouraged the youth representatives to serve on city advisory committees where appropriate and suggested specific ideas such as a welcome packet for new homeowners and youth involvement with existing event planning. City staff said they would consider appointing youth council representatives to the quincentennial/250th planning committee and explore how the youth council can coordinate with the Chamber and local tourism efforts.
The council and staff welcomed the youth council’s plans for community outreach and publicity and invited the students to return with more‑detailed proposals for committee participation.
