HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — The Public Works Committee heard an update Oct. 28 on a request for proposals to alter the wooden railing along the Saunders Ferry Road bridge.
Staff said the city received a single response to the RFP, with a price of approximately $270,000. The selected approach would retain most of the wooden framing, remove some cross slats, install additional stiffener posts and run wire infill through the posts to meet a more open-line-of-sight approach while keeping the wood aesthetic.
Committee members noted the cost and asked staff to discuss timing with the Ward aldermen. Staff said the work could be considered during the next budget cycle; the city will not proceed until aldermen and budget staff confirm priority and funding.
Why it matters: The change would improve sightlines to the lake for drivers and residents while preserving significant portions of the bridge’s wooden appearance. The price reflects structural modifications and a goal of retaining the bridge’s look while meeting updated safety expectations.
What’s next: Staff will coordinate with the ward aldermen and determine whether to include the work in the next budget cycle.
