City staff told the council that during installation of tornado sirens they discovered battery boxes were failing and batteries were shifting or falling out of their mounts. Staff said replacement boxes were ordered but delivery was delayed beyond an Oct. 1 expected ship date.
Gary said a vendor quoted about $4,000 per siren to install new boxes (roughly $8,000 for two), but a city staff member, Sean, volunteered to assist with installation, potentially reducing contractor costs. "There's just two wires that come into the box and then it's spread off to each battery," Gary said in describing the work. "Sean said that we could do them. He could help us out."
No firm procurement action or additional budget appropriation was recorded in the transcript; staff said they were awaiting shipping dates from the supplier.
