School committee approves DECA district and state trips and 2027 Disney music trip

The Pembroke School Committee on Oct. 7 approved three overnight/out-of-state student trips presented by the superintendent.

The first approval covered DECA District 1 competition at the Quincy Marriott (Jan. 8) where students will stay one night; the second approval covered the DECA State competition at the Seaport in March (March 12). The superintendent noted that students who qualify at state level could later advance to nationals, with past years’ nationals held in Orlando. The committee approved each trip by voice vote (recorded as 4–0).

Committee members discussed how rooming and chaperones are arranged for overnight trips. "Do I have that right? So generally, they — you know, if you're putting four kids in a room, they generally have a say in who's in that room," a committee member asked. The superintendent confirmed that the district policy governs required chaperone numbers and the genders of chaperones for mixed-gender trips, and that students may submit roommate preferences though not all requests can be guaranteed.

The committee also approved a high-school music trip to Disney in April 2027. The superintendent told members the music trip typically draws about 70 students and that the vendor for the trip indicated the rate would be locked once families place deposits. The committee approved the Disney trip by voice vote (recorded as unanimous 4–0).

Ending: The approvals allow planning to proceed; if a student qualifies for national DECA competition, the committee said it would review that request separately if it arises.
