The Pembroke School Committee voted on Oct. 7 to advance a first reading of policy IKFE, which establishes the district's local competency-determination process replacing the former MCAS-based approach, and separately approved a technical correction to policy IKF to fix wording on wellness credits and graduation requirements.
At the meeting the policy subcommittee presented curriculum maps and scope-and-sequence documents intended to demonstrate how local coursework meets the academic frameworks previously assessed through MCAS. Committee members discussed appeal processes (principal-level decisions with an additional appeals layer) and noted additional procedural safeguards for students with individualized education programs (IEPs). "They're starting to know right away in ninth grade," a committee discussion summarized, describing when students and families would be notified if intervention or course changes were needed to meet competency expectations.
The committee accepted the IKFE policy for a first reading; the transcript records the motion and a voice vote recorded as unanimous (4–0). The committee also approved a correction to IKF to reflect the correct credit counting for wellness education (the meeting packet showed a wording/credit correction); that vote was recorded 4–0.
Ending: Both items were advanced at the Oct. 7 meeting for the committee's regular process; the IKFE item remains at first read for additional feedback and a future second reading.
