Council OKs ordinance allowing 50-foot pylon signs near Highway 65

The Blaine City Council voted on Oct. 20 to amend the city code to permit pylon signs up to 50 feet tall within 600 feet of the center line of Highway 65, with a maximum face area of 180 square feet.
Sheila, interim community development director, said the amendment mirrors language used on the city’s north side after earlier bridge construction and is being advanced now in anticipation of upcoming bridge projects on Highway 65. Staff recommended limiting the eligible properties to those within 600 feet of the highway center line to avoid a cluttered appearance. Renderings prepared by the city’s consultant were shown to illustrate sight lines and how the signs would appear from the new bridges.
Council member Robertson described the ordinance as a sign that Highway 65 improvements are moving forward, saying the project was expected to go to bid in February and construction could begin in April, subject to MnDOT schedule. The council adopted the amendment on second reading; the Planning Commission had recommended approval and no public comments were recorded at the meeting.
The amendment sets materials, size and location limits in the Highway Overlay District; staff-level design details will be finalized through permit review processes.
