Supervisor Renell Starkey told the board that a tribal broadband project will run fiber from Smith River toward the Oregon border and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
"There is new information that Tullahewaenae Nation is going to enter into either a joint build tract or a standalone contract, where they're going to be providing or installing the fiber from Smith River all the way up to the Oregon border... it is supposed to be completed by December 2026," Starkey said.
Starkey also said the local behavioral health board approved moving forward with innovation funding for a new teen center called Trillium, which would serve youth ages 10–18; the proposal will open for public comment before returning to the behavioral health board and then to the Board of Supervisors for final approval. She contrasted Trillium with Coastal Connections, which serves ages 14–24.
The board heard that the Humboldt‑Del Norte Film Commission has supported three recent local productions, including an Audi car commercial expected to air nationally; county leaders said the activity raises the county’s profile and can bring economic benefits through location work.
Ending: Staff said projects are at different stages: the fiber project has a multi‑year construction timeline, Trillium will require additional public‑comment and board approvals, and film work will continue with coordination between the Commission and county permitting.
