Commission proclaims October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; YWCA plans Purple Glow Run/Walk Oct. 17

The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 7 unanimously proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month after a presentation from YWCA executive director Melinda Boss.
Boss described local service activity for the month (her figures were monthly totals for August as cited): the YWCA served 65 clients that month, 57 of whom were new to the program; 45 contacts provided individual advocacy; the shelter housed clients for a total of 81 days; and the office filed five protection orders during the month. Boss said the agency receives crisis calls and trains advocates to respond to suicide and crisis line callers, and she urged public recognition that domestic violence occurs in every community.
Boss invited commissioners and residents to the YWCA’s Purple Glow Run/Walk and memorial on Oct. 17 at the Young at Heart Senior Center; the event will include a Silent Witness memorial for victims of domestic violence from Sweetwater County. Commissioners then read the proclamation into the record and approved it by vote (motion by Commissioner Toman; second by Commissioner Jones).
Boss said the YWCA posts stories of victims during October on its Facebook page, provides bracelets and resources for the public, and offers a crisis line and shelter services for residents seeking help. The board instructed staff to provide a signed copy of the proclamation to the YWCA and thanked local victims’ advocates for their work.
