Granite County commissioners on Oct. 28 approved renewal of the county—s inmate excess medical insurance and claims administration.
County staff described the coverage and costs during the meeting: the base premium was reported as approximately $1.04 per inmate per day, with optional additional coverages (mental health, substance abuse, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS) priced at approximately $0.03 per inmate per day each. "It's a dollar 4 per inmate for medical insurance per day and then 3¢ per day for other entities like mental health and substance abuse," a staff member said.
Commissioners discussed which optional coverages to include; one commissioner said most categories were needed and questioned whether substance-abuse coverage was necessary because the county does not directly send inmates to substance-abuse treatment. After discussing, the board voted in favor of renewing the coverage. A commissioner noted the premium is charged only when inmates are housed: "If there's 0 inmates in the jail for the month, there'd be no premium," a staff member said.
The board instructed staff to sign and return the renewal to maintain coverage for high-cost claims and administrative services.
