County weighs replacement or rental of solid-waste equipment after extended repair delay

Granite County staff reported Oct. 28 that a key piece of solid-waste equipment remains under repair and that repairs have been slower than expected. Staff told the commissioners the contractor has been working for nearly a month; the county is renting replacement equipment while assessing whether to repair, replace, or buy a used unit.
"If he can't fix it, we need to know," a commissioner said. Staff said they would press the contractor for a definitive assessment this week. The county noted the option to fund a replacement with an interfund loan if necessary. "We can do an interfund loan if we have to, and that's not going to upset the budget in any way," a staff member said.
Officials discussed rental costs, potential purchase prices and mechanic time. No formal motion or contract was approved; the board asked staff to return with repair cost estimates and a purchase-vs.-rent recommendation.
