Staff noted operational consequences beyond route reductions. Presenter said the change could eliminate about nine routes and would therefore affect transportation staff. The district also raised options to reduce costs related to extracurricular travel, such as evaluating whether two teams could share a bus for away contests or whether the district should discontinue transportation for some athletic events.
Board members and commenters raised concerns about student access, equity and the impact on athletics and performing arts activities. Staff said boundary changes and elimination of athletic transportation would need to be scheduled for the next school year and that any personnel changes would follow collective bargaining agreements.
