Rebecca Shaffer of the county planning department told commissioners Oct. 28 that Lawrence County will apply to the Commonwealth Finance Authority for a Local Share Account grant of $661,685 to rehabilitate the county-owned Savage Trail, which runs through Union and Mahoning townships alongside the Mahoning River.
Shaffer said the project would be phased and, if funded, would cover trail resurfacing and resealing, fence and culvert replacements, improvements to the trailhead landing, and installation of a kiosk and benches. The county previously received funding for an earlier phase and staff said this application repeats the earlier request for the remaining work.
Commissioners approved Resolution 360 to support the grant application and instructed staff to move forward with the submission. No award was announced at the meeting; staff noted that prior awards have been phased and that project implementation will depend on the grant decision.
