Committee approves key-fob pouches and $350 holiday-safety PSA to deter porch-package theft

The Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee approved two outreach initiatives to address package theft and holiday safety concerns.

First, the committee authorized an order of 50 RFID/key-fob pouches to be used as a public-safety giveaway at station open houses and community events. The vendor quote provided at the meeting showed only a small unit price difference between 50 and 100 units; the committee chose the 50-unit order to limit upfront spending while starting the outreach program. Staff will finalize artwork and imprinting with the vendor and arrange distribution at outreach events.

Second, the committee approved producing a short holiday-safety public service announcement (PSA) at a cost of $350. The proposed PSA will include three short scenarios: (1) porch-package safety and how to avoid theft, (2) shopping and parking awareness—best practices for keeping newly purchased items out of sight—and (3) recommendations for out-of-town residents who want neighbors or police to monitor deliveries and property while they are away. The committee directed staff to finalize scripts, secure filming logistics and submit the script to law-enforcement partners for approval prior to production.

Committee members said they would pair the physical giveaway (pouches) with PSA distribution via town communication channels and social media. The committee asked staff to return with a distribution plan and the final posted link once the PSA is complete.
