Spokane City Council voted to defer consideration of Resolution 2025-71, which proposes neighborhood speed signage designs intended to encourage motorists to slow down in residential areas. The vote followed public comment raising objections to one proposed slogan and requests for alternative wording and community-sourced suggestions.
Several residents said they support speed-reduction signs but objected to the phrase that had circulated in staff materials; alternatives suggested by residents included family-friendly and humor-light options such as “Slow down, save lives,” “Be a turtle,” and other neighborhood-submitted ideas. Elizabeth Goldsmith, a District 2 resident, presented several alternative slogans she had collected from youth and neighbors.
Council members said packet materials contained an incorrect or outdated sign set and that updated options had been developed but not yet placed in the meeting packet. Council member Lambdin moved to defer to Nov. 10 so revised signs could be circulated and additional community input obtained; the motion passed 7-0.
Council discussion included a suggestion to pursue a future community design contest for kid-created signs; members also discussed phased replacement of signs so future design experiments could be tested without waste. The resolution was not adopted at Tuesday’s meeting; the item will return with updated designs and a final recommendation.
