Staff also described the office’s lottery process for determining ballot placement when multiple candidates file late on the final day.
On petition‑signing rules, the commission representative said a voter may sign a petition for an independent candidate even if the voter previously signed a petition for an established‑party candidate, but a voter may not sign more than one independent candidate’s petition for the same contest in the same year. “They can sign for an independent or a new political party,” the representative said.
The election office said it will post a daily list of filers to its website each evening shortly after 5 p.m. during the filing window. Staff answered committee questions about deadlines and said the office enforces the 5 p.m. close—“the door will lock”—on the final filing day.
