Commission approves routine consent items including appointment to Architectural Review Committee and expanded tree plantings

At its Oct. 27 meeting the Birmingham City Commission handled routine business on the consent agenda, approving multiple items by roll call after two items were pulled for discussion. The commission unanimously appointed Benjamin Motele as a regular member of the Architectural Review Committee to fill a term expiring April 11, 2028; he was sworn in at the meeting.

Commissioners also approved consent item 5j, which expands the city's tree-planting program and listed a larger variety of species for replacement plantings; commissioners acknowledged resident petitions for a future tree committee and said staff would note interest if a committee is proposed. Staff reminded voters of the Nov. 4 election, updated precinct maps and early-vote sites, and noted the city's absentee ballot drop boxes.

During the pulled consent-item discussion on the Village Fair (annual special event), staff and police described similar officer deployment but an increased billing period to capture post-fair coverage for crowds remaining downtown; the Chamber operations manager said the chamber will pay the fees but that a roughly 35% increase in police-billing would present a budgeting challenge. Commissioners offered operational suggestions (extra fencing, egress management) and praised the police department's enforcement work and subsequent prosecutions for last year's incidents.

Other informational highlights in the manager's report included new playground installations under construction, a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant award (~$264,000) for replacement SCBA equipment, and a parking-garage restriping plan.
