The Common Council adopted Resolution 25-45 designating a city-owned industrial parcel near William Richardson Court as an economic revitalization area and approving a seven-year real-property tax abatement for Michigan Motorsports LLC.
City staff said the company plans to build approximately a 50,000-square-foot distribution, office and showroom facility on the city-owned site and anticipates more than $4.5 million in initial investment; the owners said the site will accommodate relocation of their current workforce (about 15 employees) and could support roughly 29 new hires as the business expands. Eric Glavich, director of growth and opportunity, noted the property has been city-owned and otherwise produced little tax revenue; the project is expected to generate substantially more annual tax liability once improvements are complete.
Owners Dan and Easter Baber described their business as a performance-automotive distributor and said they plan to bring current employees from Niles, Michigan, and hire additional staff in the South Bend area. No members of the public registered opposition during the public hearing; the council adopted the resolution by roll-call vote.
