Board reviews fall/winter overnight travel requests; district outlines chaperone and funding rules

Shannon presented a schedule of fall and winter activities and athletics that require overnight travel and answered board questions about chaperones, rooming and who pays the costs.
She said programs may normally use up to two overnights in a regular season; that limit does not include postseason or state events. The district’s practice is to send at least two adults as chaperones on overnight trips; for larger groups, additional staff and parent chaperones may accompany students (Shannon described a recent band trip with 11 staff and 13 parent chaperones). Students typically room three-to-four per hotel room to meet district expectations. The district indicated that overnight trip costs are generally covered by student fundraising or parent groups, unless a trip qualifies for state funding.
Board members asked about minimum adult supervision, privacy and staff assignments for gender-specific activities; Shannon said the district aims to send two adults and to ensure appropriate gender and staff coverage for activities such as girls’ wrestling. The board had no substantive objections.
