Hudson School District administrators introduced Alera Group as the district’s new employee benefits consultant and asked the board to endorse a three-year plan to reduce health-care costs and improve employee engagement.
Alera Group representatives presented the firm’s approach and findings from a district playbook and score-card survey. The consultants said the district’s current medical plan per-member-per-month, or PMPM, is about $691; Alera Group identified a target PMPM of roughly $450 to reach over the next three years and recommended implementing a claims-analytics tool to monitor performance and drive specific interventions.
Consultants identified four priority areas where they expect the most savings and impact: pharmacy, high-cost claimants, primary care access and value-based pricing. They said roughly 10% of plan participants typically account for about 80% of total plan costs and stressed targeted care coordination for those high-cost claimants. The presentation also noted wide price variability for identical procedures and proposed steering employees toward high-value providers to reduce pricing failures.
Administrators and consultants described planned next steps and a renewal timeline: building a financial-performance model; actuarial rate-setting in January; a recommendation and premium-rate development in February; and final decisions and potential open-enrollment materials in March. The analytics work is expected to require claims-file testing and roughly 90 days to integrate with the district’s administrator.
District members asked about the role of pharmacy in total spend; consultants said pharmacy commonly represents about 30% of employer health costs and noted it was an area for focused work. The group also discussed employee communications and benefit-counselor services: Alera Group will provide a ben (benefit) counselor team to help employees with plan navigation and to protect employee privacy by reporting utilization only at aggregated levels.
The board did not take a formal vote during the presentation. Administrators said they will return with more detailed financial plan performance and analytics reports when those tools are implemented.
