Teen speaker urges Lee's Summit to ban single-use plastic bags, citing environmental and health concerns

"I know Lee's Summit should join the fight against single use plastic bags," Hall said, citing other cities and states that have acted. She told the council the city’s annual use is roughly 39,000,000 single-use plastic bags, based on a cited population figure and a per-person annual average.
Hall said plastics’ lifecycle uses fossil fuels and that chemicals from plastics can reach water supplies and harm wildlife and human health. She asked the council to "deeply consider" the idea of a ban for the city’s future.
The mayor thanked Hall for the presentation; no formal referral, ordinance or council direction on the issue was recorded during the session. Hall's comments were made during the public-comment portion of the agenda and were received for the record.
