City staff on Tuesday recapped the ninth annual Strikeout Cancer softball weekend, highlighted an expanded Friday-night slate of events and volunteer contributions, and presented a $9,780 donation to the Cancer Resource Center of Mendocino County.
Jake Burgess, community services supervisor, and Kyle Ness, senior sports coordinator, told the council the event began in 2017 as a single-day softball tournament and this year expanded to include Friday night fundraising activities — a skills-hitting competition, a home-run derby, a closest-to-the-pin golf challenge, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle — as well as a men’s wood-bat tournament, a women’s slow-pitch tournament and a coed Sunday tournament.
Ness said the weekend attracted roughly 364 participants and a mix of local and out-of-town teams, and praised a volunteer committee and multiple sponsors for expanding the weekend’s programming. He credited Heather Penny (UKI Trophies and Beautiful Things), Brandon Chanoff, the Most Hated softball family, parks lead worker Raul Ramos and other volunteers and staff for field preparation, recruitment and event operations. He said the Days Inn provided a participant rate and the event drew visitors from as far as Modesto and Daly City.
Organizers reported a fundraising breakdown: $3,200 from a raffle and Friday-night lane sponsorships, $1,300 from the skills competition and home-run derby, and $5,280 from tournament activities, for a total donation of $9,780 to the Cancer Resource Center of Mendocino County. The council and staff presented a ceremonial check to the center during the meeting.
Speakers thanked volunteers, sponsors and city staff for running the multi-day event and said they hope to expand participation for the event’s 10th anniversary.
Provenance: Presentation and check presentation appear in the transcript beginning at 00:01:50 and continuing through the ceremonial presentation and council comments. Excerpts supporting fundraising totals and participation are cited below.
Ending: Council members praised the organizers and suggested future playful ways to involve elected officials in next year’s events.
