Planning Commission Approves Bone Adventure Expansion, Adds Wording Clarifications to Conditions
Summary
The Costa Mesa Planning Commission approved two conditional use permits on Oct. 27 to allow The Bone Adventure to operate a single dog-care business across two properties at 1619 and 1629 Superior Avenue, subject to conditions limiting outdoor hours, capping dog counts per site and clarifying entry/transfer measures to prevent dogs from escaping.
The Costa Mesa Planning Commission approved two conditional use permits on Oct. 27 to allow The Bone Adventure to operate a single business across two adjacent industrial parcels at 1619 and 1629 Superior Avenue, with conditions addressing hours, outdoor play-area limits and operational controls.
Assistant Planner Froylan Garcia said staff recommended approval and that the two properties require separate entitlements because they are not under the same ownership. Garcia described the project as operating as a single business from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the outdoor play areas limited to 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and site-specific dog limits of 51 dogs at 1619 Superior and 46 dogs at 1629 Superior. The project also calls for parking restriping, expanded play areas (approximately 5,090 square feet at 1619 and 2,300 square feet at 1629), updated landscaping and a total of 11 parking spaces at 1619 and eight spaces at 1629 after the proposed reconfiguration.
The permits were processed as conditional use permits, PCUP-25-0018 (1619 Superior Avenue) and PCUP-25-0019 (1629 Superior Avenue). Garcia said public notification complied with Costa Mesa Municipal Code sec. 13-29d and staff found the project categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act under Guideline section 15301 (existing facilities).
