Auburn council introduces updated building standards code ahead of 2026 state deadline
Summary
Following a staff presentation, the council voted Oct. 27 to introduce for first reading an ordinance adopting the statewide building standards code updates and local amendments, required to be in place before Jan. 1, 2026.
Planning Director Tia Clump and Senior Building Inspector Michael Panola presented an overview of the required triennial state building standards-code updates and recommended adoption of the updated codes with local amendments as authorized under the Health and Safety Code. Clump said the city’s last formal adoption with local amendments occurred for the 2022 code, and that the statewide update becomes effective Jan. 1, 2026, so the city must adopt the new codes before that date.
Panola, introduced as the senior building inspector, answered technical questions and assisted with staff explanations. The council opened and closed the public hearing with no public speakers and subsequently moved to introduce the ordinance for first reading. The motion to introduce (first reading) passed on a roll-call vote recorded in the transcript as unanimous among members present.
