Council selects three candidates to recommend for Springfield Police Advisory Committee

The City Council interviewed applicants for three neighborhood‑at‑large vacancies on the Springfield Police Advisory Committee and reached informal consensus on nominees to forward for formal appointment at a regular session.

Tiffany Monroe, staff liaison to the Springfield Police Advisory Committee, said the city received six applications for three vacancies; one applicant withdrew and five were interviewed. Applicants described law enforcement, corrections, corrections‑adjacent, public administration and community leadership experience.

Sefu Balam described 11 years in public safety work including corrections and child protective services and emphasized trauma‑informed responses, staffing pressures and community trust. David Floyd described servant leadership and prior nonprofit board service and urged outreach. Incumbent Jonathan Hayes cited corrections, firefighting and the police department’s recent accreditation and emphasized recruiting, retention and officer safety. Richard Jones, a 33‑year law enforcement veteran with the Springfield Police Department, identified staffing and recruiting as central challenges and urged transparency and community presence. Savannah described a public administration background with experience in program evaluation and said communication and recruitment were priorities.

Councilors each identified three candidates they would forward for appointment; multiple councilors named incumbent Jonathan Hayes and Sefu Balam among their recommendations. Staff confirmed the council would forward three recommended nominees to the regular session for formal appointment; no appointment votes took place at the work session.
