Yorba Linda orders abatement for three properties after weed-inspection finds persistent fire hazards

The city council adopted a resolution declaring three properties public nuisances and ordering weed abatement after staff reported that three parcels remained noncompliant following the annual weed-abatement process.
Enforcement Manager Bobby Avina told the council that staff inspected 1,131 parcels on the weed-abatement list and that only three remained in violation after notices and administrative citations. “Out of the 1,131 weed abatement properties, only, 3 parcels remain in violation,” Avina said, and recommended the council declare those parcels nuisances and order abatement to reduce hazardous fire conditions.
A nearby resident, Richard Canfield, urged the council to conduct abatement earlier in the year, before summer and the July 4th fireworks period, because vegetation is much more hazardous in mid-summer. Council members discussed that concern and directed staff to place repeat violators on an expedited inspection and abatement track; staff agreed to add the persistent properties to an expedited list for the next cycle.
Council moved and seconded the resolution; a roll-call vote approved the abatement order. Staff will proceed with abatement and may assess abatement costs as liens on parcel taxes if property owners do not comply.
