Superintendent reports construction delays, athletics updates and positive preview of state report card

Superintendent Dr. Thomas used the Oct. 28 board meeting to brief trustees on athletics, construction and a preliminary preview of the district's state report card.
Dr. Thomas said several construction projects are in progress but experiencing delays. He said an indoor facility project is waiting on a fire-rated door that is holding up completion, though base work and turf installation are underway. The Heron Creek playground and basketball court have been installed and are "coming along," and cement work for additional turf areas was recently poured.
On athletics, Dr. Thomas noted the high school volleyball team was competing in Birmingham and that the program had reached the playoffs in flag football. He said the football team had improved and was avoiding a losing season, with a challenging away game scheduled Thursday night in Fort Walton.
Dr. Thomas also said the district received a brief, unofficial preview that showed improvements on the systemwide state report card and that the official results would be released Monday; he cautioned the board that the state has not made the results official.
Dr. Thomas thanked board members for their support of programs and construction investments that, he said, were helping students and staff. He also mentioned a recently installed wildcat statue shipped from Taiwan and ongoing lighting and pole work on campus.
