Lang Park redevelopment concepts prompt residents to urge preservation of green space and careful parking controls

Laguna Beach residents told the City Council they value Lang Park’s open field and mature trees and urged caution about redevelopment plans that would replace field space with large structures and add parking accessible to beachgoers.

Consultants showed two ambitious concepts for Lang Park: both envisioned a multiuse community center with gym, preschool and arts spaces, and subterranean parking; one concept retained a sports field while another placed the parking and some facilities differently and removed the field. Cost estimates presented ranged from about $65 million to $73 million.

Public comments were strongly protective of Lang Park’s green space. Speakers said the park is South Laguna’s primary local play field and opposed intensive redevelopment that would remove open lawn used for t-ball, birthday parties and youth sports. Several callers warned, “if you build it, they will come,” arguing new parking would increase nonresident beach overflow into neighborhood streets and urged parking be restricted for facility users only if added.

Council reaction: Members acknowledged concerns and suggested lower-cost/light-touch refresh alternatives. Several members favored preserving the existing sports field and gym functions, studying smaller renovations, and deferring any major Lang Park capital spending to the next Capital Improvement Program review rather than funding it immediately. Members also asked staff to consider resident-only parking or other controls if parking is added.

Outcome: The council asked staff to fold Lang Park concepts into the facilities master plan as options, but not to increase spending now; public engagement and community input were requested before final designs. No formal vote was taken.
