Members of the Parks and Recreation Commission’s facilities committee told the commission on Oct. 27 that they have completed multiple site visits with city staff to inspect parks and facilities and compile repair lists.
Committee members said they toured Trainham Park, Roddy Park, Klein and Schneider Park, Brooks pool and Harris Park. They described seeing generally good maintenance and several small items that could be fixed quickly as well as larger items that will require budgeted work. One member said she was “very impressed with the condition of Harris Park” and praised the new restroom facilities and playground placement relative to sight lines to ballfields.
The committee described walking-path improvements and volunteer involvement: volunteers and nearby residents have planted trees and shrubs along paths, and city crews have supported those efforts by providing wood chips and making service requests when issues were identified, such as lights that did not come on. Committee members also toured pool operations, including the pump room and filters, and said pool staff were knowledgeable and proud of their equipment.
No formal commission action was taken on the committee’s report; members encouraged continuing the two-park-at-a-time visits until the committee completes the 15-month review cycle. Commissioners invited other members to join future site visits where schedule allows.
Key observations
• Trainham Park: tucked within a housing area; committee noted limited visibility and the benefit of guided visits.
• Roddy Park: visible from Kentucky Avenue; committee noted its gated proximity to a major street.
• Brooks pool: committee toured the pump room and operations; staff described maintenance routines and filter condition.
• Harris Park: praised for restroom upgrades, playground placement, and general upkeep.
The facilities committee will continue scheduled inspections and return any items that require capital funding to staff for budget consideration.
