Pinellas board recognizes Lights On After School, exchange teacher and principal awards

The Pinellas County School Board on Oct. 28 adopted a proclamation endorsing Lights On After School, the national celebration of after-school programs, and recognized district partners and program leaders for their support.
Dr. Getty Saint Jean, a Title I specialist, described the national initiative'which the board noted began in 2000'and thanked local partners including representatives from the Juvenile Welfare Board and local YMCA branches. Mrs. Peters read the proclamation and the board approved the item by voice vote, recorded as 7 to 0.
The board also welcomed an exchange teacher from Nagano City, Japan, who will visit multiple Pinellas schools through Nov. 20 as part of the city-sister relationship with Clearwater. Danica Jones, chief academic officer, noted the teacher will be residing with a host family and visiting K'12 classrooms.
Area 4 Superintendent Paula Texel introduced recipients of the 2026 principal achievement awards: Christy James (principal, Ponce de Leon Elementary) and Brooke Crandall (assistant principal, Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8). Texel noted Christy James recently welcomed a baby and that both awardees will be entered in statewide competition.
All recognitions and the proclamation were presented during the special order agenda; no board member opposed the items.
