The Saint Francis Area Schools transportation supervisor reported to the board that the 2024–25 school year has “been smooth, except for a few bumps,” but that a propane-powered bus fire on Oct. 3 revealed both a vulnerability and a safety feature in the fleet.
In a presentation, the transportation supervisor said the bus involved was a 2024 International Model 3000 propane 77‑passenger vehicle (Bus 17) with 28,167 miles and delivered Dec. 18, 2023. The supervisor said the driver evacuated students out the front of the bus and the vehicle was empty “in less than 40 seconds.” She added that the bus’s propane fuel system has a float mechanism that shut fuel off after a hose was severed by heat.
