Several public commenters urged the Eugene City Council to restore Cahoots-style alternative response services and to fund or restart Willamette Valley Scribe Care (WVSC) to handle non-criminal calls for service.
Cameron Stringfield, speaking for community activists, said "If you'd actually like to address public safety and free up officers to tackle more serious criminal activity, schedule a work session to get Willamette Valley Scribe Care fully funded and back on the streets of Eugene." Rob Sheldon, a resident and longtime Cahoots advocate, said community members and service providers are ready to move but that an RFP and clearer city timeline are needed.
Councilors responded that the city manager is preparing materials and that the budget committee previously asked staff to investigate Cahoots-like services. Councilor Leach said the city manager would send a memo on alternative response by the end of the week, and several councilors asked staff to provide clearer timelines and next steps so community providers could proceed. No formal vote or funding commitment to reinstate Cahoots/WVSC occurred at the meeting; councilors said an implementation timeline and potential RFP would be considered in follow-up.
