Police Chief Juan Gonzalez told the commission the department had a strong turnout for the Oct. 3 entry-level exam: "we did have approximately about 112 applicants that showed up to the test and we had 235 that actually applied for the test," and said the department is moving into the next phases of hiring for multiple police-officer openings. "I wanna thank Civil Service Director Ms. Ramirez and her staff for the help that was done on the date of the test," Gonzalez said.
The promotional lists accepted by the commission will be used for internal promotions in the fire department. During the administrative reports Deputy Fire Chief Carlos Arispe said no candidates passed the deputy chief promotional exam, a point that department leaders said will affect future staffing decisions but was not itself the subject of a commission motion.
All formal approvals at the meeting were taken by voice vote with commissioners indicating "aye," and the clerk announced each motion as carried. The approvals recorded on Oct. 28 allow city departments to proceed with next steps in hiring and internal promotion processes in accordance with civil service procedures.
